What to Expect: Our Intake Process

We understand that reaching out for help can be one of the hardest steps to take — and we want you to know you’re not alone. If you’re a young adult between the ages of 18 and 26 and are currently without stable housing, our team is here to listen and support you.

When you contact the HBP RAIN Foundation, we’ll begin with a brief intake conversation. This is a warm, one-on-one conversation where we’ll ask a few questions to better understand your current situation and how you came to experience homelessness. It helps us determine whether our services are the right fit — because getting you the right kind of support matters.

We’ll also give you a quick overview of our house guidelines — things like curfew, shared responsibilities, and what it means to live in a respectful, community-centered space. It’s important that anyone entering our shelter understands and agrees to these expectations, not just for safety and structure, but because we’re building a space where everyone can heal and grow.

If we’re the right place for you, we’ll guide you through the next steps — with compassion, dignity, and care.

“When I got kicked out for being who I am, I didn’t know where to go. I was scared, tired, and just needed somewhere that wouldn’t judge me. I didn’t always like the rules at RAIN—real talk, sometimes I felt like they were doing too much. But once I saw it was really about keeping us all safe and helping us move forward, I got it.

That’s when I started focusing. The staff saw something in me I couldn’t see in myself. I left there with a plan and finally felt like I had a chance to breathe again.”

Aging Out, Finding Stability

Finding a Safe Space Despite the Rules

“I aged out of foster care at 18 and had nowhere to go. Bounced around a few places, but nothing felt stable. When I came to HBP RAIN Foundation, I finally had a place to stop surviving and start thinking about my future. The staff and other residents—some of them became like family. They were the light I needed when everything else felt dark.”

“I’m not even gonna lie—I came in mad at the world. I didn’t wanna be there and I let everybody know it. Broke rules, had an attitude... I probably set records for how many times I got written up. But something shifted. The therapy they offered? I finally gave it a try, and it changed me. I dealt with stuff I’d been running from.

Now, I’m living in Florida with my partner, got my own spot, working full-time, and actually enjoying life. If RAIN hadn’t been there? I don’t know if I’d still be here, for real.”
